Job Description & Salary Expectations
It Sales Job Description
Being in IT Sales, or Cloud of SaaS Software Sales (we'll just use IT Sales from now on in the article) is probably one of the best and most highly paid, sought after Sales Jobs in the 'profession'. Only telecommunications and specialist electronic, medical and defence and aerospace technology competes or in some cases pays higher and that's only because some of these other areas require a specialist level of knowledge only a Master's Degree / PHD can give you.
IT Sales covers a very wide range of opportunities in the space and most people in the industry start off in the more junior Inside Sales role and progress up. Opportunities exist from companies of all shapes and sizes from start-ups where the offer of a base salary and equity can be alluring right through to more established SaaS Software companies like Salesforce and Oracle. In these organisations, they usually have well-oiled sales machines and have all vertical and horizontal market territories and strategies mapped out meaning that there's massive opportunity for rapid career progression, even from the first rung on the ladder. A typical progression might look like;
SDR / Sales Development Rep
Inside Sales Manager
SMB Account Executive
GB Account Executive
Enterprise Account Executive / Account Manager
Enterprise Account Director
RVP Regional Vice President of SMB
SVP Senior Vice President of Mid Market & Enterprise
See, that's quite a lot and there are plenty of other steps potentially that could be added depending on the company.
Experience and Education
For the most part, a tertiary qualification is not mandatory though the more senior advertised sales jobs might ask for a graduate and in some cases, an MBA. For those starting at SDR / Inside Sales level, most candidates will usually have a high-school / graduate education and maybe a few years sales experience to boot. It's quite common for well positioned SaaS businesses to take talented graduates. When we start to get into the more experienced Account Executive or Enterprise level AE's, you do see Degree education as a prerequisite in some job descriptions as it is often considered a level of achievement where the same effort and discipline is required to be successful in a senior sales role. Employers often like business / commerce degrees for more general business acumen and experience. That said, once you're in the industry, you are judged on results, who you know and who knows you, regardless of the job description. Nothing will ever beat 'what business can you bring with you' and is the jobseeker culturally aligned.
It Sales Salary Expectations
Depending on the role, salaries vary enormously. Taking the roles below, we'll just work on typical base range and OTE. Take into account that some companies throw in extra perks such as additional holiday, healthcare, gym membership, car allowance, mobile, home internet and stock options for example.
SDR / Sales Development Rep base $55K to $75 - $100+ OTE
Inside Sales Manager $55K to $75 - $100+ OTE
SMB Account Executive $65K to $90K - $120+ OTE
GB Account Executive $80K to $120K - $150K+ OTE
Enterprise Account Executive / Account Manager $100K to $160K - $180+ OTE
Enterprise Account Director $150 to $200 - $250K+ OTE
Like anything, salary is relative to the revenue you bring in and the profitability made from the cost of sale, i.e. how much does it cost the business to employ you.
Why It's Awesome
IT Sales is a great career and pays well. If you're lucky enough to join a great ecosystem such as salesforce.com then you pretty much have a job for life if you're good at your job and form great trusting relationships with customers. The cost of entry is high however and you need to be a good operator to be successful. The industry for the most part is future proof and will always need salespeople.
Things to Look Out For
The key considerations here are to be with a company and product that is still current. As we see regularly, some technology companies plateau following years of rapid growth and success. Those that don't continue to innovate get left behind as there's always a flood of disruptors looking to break into the market. Be mindful of how your company is doing in comparison to the rest of the market and don't be afraid to jump from a sinking ship.
